Delivering Quality Healthcare

Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)

An ENT doctor treats conditions that include nasal obstruction, allergies, chronic sinusitis, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic ear infections. We proudly offer the most minimally invasive treatment options available, and our team is led by board-certified otolaryngologist Dr. Lee Loftin

The tonsils and adenoids are part of the lymphatic system and serve as defenders of the immune system, protecting your body by preventing germs and bacteria from entering through your mouth and nose. Occasionally, they will develop problems themselves, requiring the attention of an ENT specialist.

Problems Associated with the Tonsils and Adenoids

Tonsillitis can occur when there is an infection and inflammation of the tonsils caused by a virus or bacteria. The most common symptom of tonsillitis is a sore throat, but you might also experience one of the following:

  • Red or swollen tonsils
  • Tonsils with white or yellow spots
  • Difficulty or painful swallowing
  • Bad breath
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Head and neck pain

While mild swelling of the adenoids might not cause problems, severe swelling can result in issues with the nose and throat with symptoms such as:

  • Breathing through the nose
  • Constant runny nose
  • Snoring
  • Ear infection

Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are both outpatient surgical procedures performed under general anesthesia. It commonly takes about a week to recover from surgery. During recovery, a soft diet may be required, and activity can be resumed when pain medication is no longer needed.

Ear Infections and Tubes

Middle ear infections are common in children ages six months to two years old as well as some adults. Some children and adults are more prone to middle ear infections. Although ear infections are often easy to treat, children who experience recurrent infections may be at risk for hearing loss or speech problems.

If a child or adult is experiencing recurrent middle ear infections and antibiotics have proven unsuccessful, they may be a suitable candidate for a myringotomy with tube placement.

Tubes are placed in the eardrum to release and equalize pressure within the middle ear, as well as keep fluid from building up behind the eardrum, thus reducing pain and the frequency of infection.

Dr. Loftin sees patients for all ear, nose and throat problems at the Whit Specialty Clinic.
